Boiler decisions

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

A practical way to compare repair costs, reliability and replacement options.

General guidance from BUTCH’S Plumbing & Heating. Your appliance instructions and the findings from an individual assessment take priority.

Get a diagnosis before deciding

A breakdown does not automatically mean a boiler needs replacing. The first useful step is to identify the fault and establish the repair options. Ask for a clear explanation and a quote that separates the immediate repair from any recommended additional work.

When a repair may make sense

Consider repairing when the fault is isolated, suitable parts are available and the boiler otherwise meets your needs. Check whether a manufacturer warranty or existing plan applies before authorising a chargeable repair. Age is one factor, but it does not establish condition on its own.

When replacement is worth discussing

Replacement may be worth considering when repairs are becoming frequent, parts are difficult to obtain, or the boiler no longer suits the household’s heating and hot-water needs. Compare the confirmed repair quote with a properly specified installation quote. Do not assume a fixed saving or payback period without an assessment.

Compare the complete installation

Ask what the quote includes: boiler and controls, any agreed system work, removal, commissioning, registration and warranty guidance. Check any exclusions and how long heating or hot water may be unavailable. The installation duration depends on the survey and scope; a conversion may involve more work than a straightforward replacement.

How BUTCH’S can help

We assess the property, existing system and hot-water demand before recommending an installation. Our written quotation sets out the agreed work. If repair remains a sensible option, ask us to explain that alongside replacement so you can make an informed decision.
